In this situation where the rates of unemployment among the Ugandan youth is escalating, there is a high demand for hands-on skilled-based education to provide the ever-increasing population with vocational skills rather than the school-based theoretical education that purely aims at creating white-collar jobs and not blue-collar jobs.In rural communities, most youth are school dropouts or have limited access to education as the scene is similar in urban communities too where the majority of the population in certain underprivileged areas dwell in slums. Moreover, most schools/universities have the provision of internship and industrial training but companies, both small and medium-scale, are reluctant to take in freshers due to lack of adequate resources and due to the cost incurred thereafter. Thus this renders our youth vulnerable and unskilled to compete in the formal job market.
★ WDF strongly believes in the power of the youth and aims to unlock their massive potential to garner their support in our community work.
★ This youth empowerment initiative has the mission of ultimately equipping the youth with crucial ‘life-skills’ and thus position them to create gainful ways of earning a living, hence promoting sustainable development among our communities.
At WDF, Skills Trainings are delivered by different professionals to pass on the relevant hands-on skills to the people who are shortlisted after a competitive series of engagements, and all beneficiaries are taught for free so that as they complete their short courses of choice, they are able to meet the quality standards of starting their own ventures or be employed. To achieve this, we carry out the following:-
★ Facilitating the introduction of improved skills development and implementation of the targeted beneficial project activities with support of development partners
★ Building the capacity of the community to provide skills trainings to vulnerable people
★ Community engagements through income generating projects and academic support by networking with partners
